It’s The Thought That Counts
The saying “it’s the thought that counts” couldn’t be more true. The worst gift I ever received (next to countless flannel nightgowns from my grandmother) was a gift certificate from a boyfriend. Even though it was to a place I enjoyed, it was a new relationship and it felt like he just handed me money. Bad gift giver! Had the gift certificate come from my flannel-nighty-giving-granny I would have rejoiced.
That said, there are many factors to consider when choosing the perfect gift for someone.
Who is the gift for and what is your relationship to that person?
If the gift is for an acquaintance or co-worker you don’t want to give an overly personal gift. You’ll want to find something appropriate to your relationship. Or if you’re trying to find a gift for a new boyfriend you’ll have to be careful not to go over the top too soon!
What is the occasion for the gift?
Birthdays and holidays are generally straight forward occasions for gift giving. Weddings on the other hand have some underlying rules that some aren’t always aware of. If you’re attending a formal wedding, you can bet that it is costing the bride and groom at least $100 for you to attend and it is customary to give a comparably priced gift.
What are the interests of the recipient?
To me, the recipient’s interests are the most important factor to consider when choosing a gift. This is what will make it clear that you put thought into your gift. Do they like gardening? Cooking? Drinking? Camping? All of the above?
What is your budget?
The best way to make an inexpensive gift look fancy is to doll it up in pretty paper and ribbons. Carefully wrap your present and you’ll automatically increase it’s thought value.
